News broke on Monday afternoon that Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes reached a mega-deal with the Chiefs that will have the 10th overall pick of the 2017 draft in Kansas City through 2031.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the deal is worth $450 million over the 10-year period and could be worth up to $503 million. The extension includes a $140 million injury guarantee, as well as a no-trade clause, the report stated.

It’s a MASSIVE contract that gives Mahomes the largest contract in professional sports history.

So why so much money? Is he worth it?

ESPN tackled that concern as well on Monday spotlighting some of his major accomplishments thus far including how he became the youngest quarterback (24) in NFL history to win both an MVP and Super Bowl title, surpassing Brett Favre. He also surpassed Tom Brady as the youngest quarterback to win Super Bowl MVP

In 2018, Mahomes posted 50 touchdowns and 5,000 yards passing. In the past two seasons, he’s led the league in passing touchdowns (89); passing yards (10,602); wins (27); Total QBR (79); and yards per attempt (8.5.) [ESPN Stats & Information]

In a post on Twitter, Mahomes expressed his gratitude and eagerness to continue bringing championships to Kansas City.

“You’ve been with me since the beginning. From rookie year, to becoming a starter, to the unconventional, to doing whatever it takes to win, to showdowns. You helped me come back from injury, you helped us come back from deficits, multiple deficits. You helped us overcome adversity to become Super Bowl Champs and we’re staying together for a long time, we’re changing a dynasty,” the video said.

Per ESPN, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said the deal has been a priority and thanked Mahomes’ agents, Chris Cabott and Leigh Steinberg.

“His abilities are so rare, and to couple that with an incredible personality is outstanding,” Veach said of Mahomes. “We’re going to continue to do everything we can to surround him with talent, and this deal provides us more flexibility to do that. He’s obviously an integral part to our success, and we’re thrilled he’s going to be the quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs for a long time.”

Along with Deshaun Watson, Lamar Jackson, Kyler Murray and Dak Prescott, Mahomes is part of a new wave of young quarterback talents taking over as the faces of the league.

For me, Mahomes is one of those players that makes you want to sit down and watch regardless of who the Chiefs are playing or if you’re personally invested in the game in any form or fashion.

I look forward to watching his career continue to flourish and as just an average NFL fan without strong ties to any particular team, he’s the type of guy you can’t help but root for. Kudos to all parties involved in making this deal happen in the midst of a global pandemic and all the other “pandemics” we are facing as a country right now.
