In the Covid-19 era of college football, there are no weeks off

The 2020 college football season is unlike any other and nothing is normal in these–you bet I’m going to say it again–unprecedented times.

No. 1 Clemson has an usually early open date this weekend as they prepare for visits from Virginia and Miami the next few weeks. While the Tigers are off this weekend, it’s not just a weekend to let loose. Clemson coaches and players face perhaps the biggest challenge ever on an off-week in being proactive and smart about how they spend their time, as Grace Raynor of The Athletic pointed out today.

The last thing Clemson needs is a handful of positive cases on Sunday and lose more bodies for likely both the Virginia and Miami games upcoming in the next two weeks. Dabo Swinney refused to tell what Clemson’s plan would be if Swinney or OC Tony Elliott or DC Brent Venables had to miss time due to positive test or being placed in protocol. Hopefully, we don’t have to find out.

FSU’s Mike Norvell is out this week against Miami after testing positive for Covid-19. We’ve already seen games left and right postponed or cancelled this season due to Covid-19 related reasons. UNC and Charlotte was postponed, Virginia Tech had week one postponed and last week’s game vs Virginia pushed to Dec. 12. The last thing Clemson needs is to come back with several players testing positive or placed under protocol after the bye week.

And who knows what happens with Virginia over the next few weeks. It truly will be everyone is listed day-to-day this season. Even the coaches.
